Day #6, Christ-Like Attributes: Faith

Hi! I’m Marci Coombs and I’ve been writing my own little lifestyle blog over HERE
for quite some time now.

I blog about everything from: church ideas and recipes to craft tutorials and party details.

I love my life!  And I love the people I share it with EVEN MORE!
I’m addicted to:  Diet Dr. Pepper, the color purple and all things polka dots!
I was SUPER excited to be asked from the Jedi Craft Girl to be apart of the 14 Day Walk with Christ.
Is this not the BEST IDEA EVER for families to take part in?
Kuddos to Amanda for creating and organizing it all!
The topic I was given was:
Christ-Like Attributes – Faith

Start the lesson out by asking your children the question:
“What is faith?”

Answers may include – –
* Confidence in something or someone
* A hope for things which are not seen, but which are true.
Have everyone turn to Alma 32:21.
“And now as I said concerning faith – faith is not to have a perfect knowledge of things; therefore if ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen, which are true.”
Attention Activity: Gather a plastic Easter egg, a few pebbles or grains of rice, and a small picture of the Savior. I printed mine out and just changed the sizing HERE.
Roll up the picture so that it fits inside the egg and cannot be seen when shut.
Shake the egg {with the rice in it} and ask the kids if they think anything is INSIDE of the egg?
They will answer YES and then you can follow up with
“But you can’t SEE anything in there…so how do you KNOW?”
Have the kids open up the egg to discover the picture.
Explain that even though we have not seen Jesus Christ, we know He is there. We have had living prophets testify of the Savior, the scriptures are written ABOUT the Savior, and we can see His existence and all of His creations in the natural beauty of the earth everyday.
“Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field:

Which indeed is the least of all the seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof.”
Ask the kids if they know how big a mustard seed is?
A mustard seed is about 1/20th of an inch in size.  It is one of the smallest seeds in the world.  Follow up by showing them this picture.
Image
Ask the kids: Do you think that it took great FAITH on the farmer’s part, to plant that teeny tiny seed – – and trust that it would grow into something large and bountiful?
Ask the kids:

What things are necessary to help a seed grow? Sunshine, water and air.
If we stop watering our seeds or place it in a dark room, will it continue to grow? No.
IF we continue to take care of our litte seed, doing everything that is necessary, our seed will staret to blossom and turn into something beautiful.
Let’s compare our FAITH to a SEED.
In order for faith to work, we need to plant it in our hearts.
Then we have to nourish it with: reading the scriptures, saying our prayers, going to church – all of these Gospel principles will help our own faith grow – – just like sunlight and water do with any type of seed.
Read Alma 33:23.
“And now, my brethern, I desire that ye shall plant this word in your hearts, and as it beginneth to swell, even so nourish it by faith.  And behold, it will become a tree, springing up in you unto everlasting life. And then may God grant unto your burdens may be light, through the joy of his Son. And even all this can ye do if ye will. Amen.”
Activity: Let the kids plant their OWN seeds….literally!
Purchase little clay pots {white styrofoam cups do the trick as well for this!} and have them decorate their pots however they’d like!
Show them the correct way to plant a seed — while discussing the necessities for the seed to grow.
Explain to them that faith is something that will continue to grow within us throughout our entire lives.  As long as we constantly NOURISH our faith, in doing what is righ, our lives will be blessed.
Dessert: Serve ‘Dirt Cups’.
This easy treat is always a hit with kiddos!
All you’ll need is:

Place your pudding into a cup of any kind, and top with crushed Oreos, gummy worms and gummy flowers.

Thanks again for having me here and taking the time to read this post.  I hope that in some way, it can help your family come closer to our Savior, during this Easter season!

Amanda

Faith Day #4

Hi! I’m Ginger, & I blog over at Ginger Snap CraftsIt’s a fun place where I share my easy, simple & cute crafty ideas, projects & recipes. I also have an amazing husband & 5 wild & crazy kiddos! I’m always busy making crafts, chasing kiddos, blogging, attending church activities & all that fun stuff! It’s never quiet around our house, and I wouldn’t change a thing. 😉

It is so fun to be over here at Jedi Craft Girl, & I’m so excited to meet all of YOU. I am so happy to be participating in the 14-day Walk with Christ. I think it’s an awesome idea to do with your family! Well, Amanda asked me to take today, and today’s topic is faith! Faith is one the very first things you have to have as you grow your testimony of the Savior!  One of my favorite chapters in the Book of Mormon is Alma 32. In that chapter Alma compares faith to a little seed.  If we plant the seed of faith in our hearts & nurture it with making good choices, attending church, praying, reading our scriptures & so on then it will grow & become stronger.

I found these little Grow Kits in the dollar section at Target! Yay! I knew they would be perfect for this project. They had all different kinds from flowers to sunflowers to strawberries to tomatoes. I bought a different one for each of my kiddos.  Inside it has a little pot, planting medium & of course, seeds. 🙂

First each kiddo decorated their pot with paint markers.

Then we did the fun part! ha! You add warm water to the growing medium, & it gets bigger!  My kiddos thought that was so cool.

Then we opened the seed packets.  Look how tiny these poppy seeds are!

Then we planted the seeds in the dirt!

Now we have to care for our seed & make sure it can grow! I’ll have to update our seed progress on my blog later! So far the seeds haven’t sprouted….but hopefully soon!
As we planted our seeds & as we care for our seeds & watch them grow we will keep talking about how we have to do the same thing with our faith! If we don’t nourish it, our faith won’t grow!
Here’s a printable to go in your 14-day Walk with Christ journal.  (I love this Primary song!)

Thank you so much for having me over, Amanda!

I’d love to keep in touch with YOU.
You can find me over at my blog or any of these fun places! 🙂

Walk with Jesus 2020

Welcome to Walk with Jesus 2020! I can’t believe this is the 8th year we have been doing this and every year is a little different!

This year we are focusing on 1 word a day that completes the phrase:

Because of HIM I am ______________.

You can access the images and a PDF of the images by clicking HERE.

Feel free to share them or print them – no permission necessary!

Make sure to follow along on Instagram for insights to each word of the day!

Life from Quarantine

Hey all! I thought I would check in to see how everyone is doing! Life got real crazy real fast. Most mornings I wake up and ask myself is it all a dream! To be honest we’ve enjoyed a slower pace and focusing on life in the home. I’ve enjoyed all the whitty comments and memes on social media – laughter is a big help. But in all seriousness this time is scary and we don’t know what the future holds.

The other day I played one of my favorite songs “Christ Alone” and I turned up the volume real loud so it filled the whole house. As the music was filling each room the lyrics were filling me. I could feel Jesus near and I could feel my faith and trust strengthened through Him.

I had the thought to create some lyric art out of the words and share them with you in hopes they will bring you peace. You can access all the files by clicking on this LINK. Feel free to share!

Also, here is the link to the music video of the song – It’s so good!!!

14 Day Walk with Christ 2017

Every Easter our family participates in a “14 Day Walk With Christ”.  This takes place the 2 weeks leading up to Easter.  Life is so busy and rushed,  Easter can come and go before we know it.  It has been extremely meaningful to focus extra attention on the Savior during these two weeks.  Every day we have a scripture, lesson, video, etc. about Jesus Christ.  You can click HERE for the index from the past years.  I hope you are able to join with us!

This year we are focusing on “Choosing Jesus”.  Each Day we will focus on a different attribute that will help us Choose Jesus each day.  Follow along on Instagram and use #walkwithchrist2017 and #choosejesus

14 day 2017

Day #1 Choose Jesus – For the next two weeks we will focus on what it means to Come Unto Christ, or to Choose Jesus in all parts of our life.

Matthew 11: 28 “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

“By His Words and His example, Christ has sown us how to draw chooser to Him,” President Henry B. Eyring.

Watch this video called Choose Him Again

Discuss in your family ways you can Choose Jesus each day.

choose kindness

Day #2 Choose Kindness

John 13:35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

Ephesians 4:32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgivingone another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.

Why do any of us have to be so mean and unkind to others? Why can’t all of us reach out in friendship to everyone about us? – President Hinckley

Be cheerful, helpful, and considerate of others. Many problems in the home are created because family members speak and act selfishly or unkindly. Concern yourself with the needs of other family members. Seek to be a peacemaker rather than to tease, fight, and quarrel.”

“Remember this: kindness begins with me.”

Activity: (adapted from Mormonshare.com)

Wrap “Special” dark chocolate bars in nice packaging and some in unattractive packaging.  Include the scripture  1 Samuel 17:7 “For the Lord seeth not as man seeth, for man looketh on the outward appearance but the Lord looketh on the heart” Display the packages and let the children choose one by the appearance of the package. Then ask each family member why they chose the package.  Have everyone open the package and read the scripture and how this relates to their lives.

Challenge:  Seek out to be kind to someone at school, work, or in your family.  Try and see them as Jesus would see them.

choose forgiveness

Day #3 Choose Forgiveness

Colossians 3: 13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.

Matthew 5: 44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

When someone has hurt us or those we care about, that pain can almost be overwhelming. It can feel as if the pain or the injustice is the most important thing in the world and that we have no choice but to seek vengeance. But Christ, the Prince of Peace, teaches us a better way. It can be very difficult to forgive someone the harm they’ve done us, but when we do, we open ourselves up to a better future. No longer does someone else’s wrongdoing control our course. When we forgive others, it frees us to choose how we will live our own lives. Forgiveness means that problems of the past no longer dictate our destinies, and we can focus on the future with God’s love in our hearts. -David E. Sorensen

We all make mistakes. The words of Jesus in the Lord’s Prayer: “And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us”

Activity:

After teaching your family about forgiveness, have everyone think of a grudge they’re still holding in their heart. Provide paper and pencils, and have each person write down what happened and how it makes them feel.  Build a outdoor camp fire and have each person wad up their paper and place it in the fire.  If anyone feels like sharing what they wrote or needs help moving past the grievance, discuss as a family what you can do to forgive people who have offended you. Talk about how much better you’ll feel if you don’t let the offense take root in your heart. Take an opportunity to turn this into a sweet experience by roasting marshmallows and making s’mores.

choose love

Day #4 Choose Love

1 John 4: 19 We love him, because he first loved us.

Matthew 22: 37-39 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all they heart, and with all they soul, and with all thy mind.  This is the first and great commandment.  And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.

Love is expressed in many recognizable ways: a smile, a wave, a kind comment, a compliment. Other expressions may be more subtle, such as showing interest in another’s activities, teaching a principle with kindness and patience, visiting one who is ill or homebound. These words and actions and many others can communicate love.-President Monson

Dale Carnegie, a well-known American author and lecturer, believed that each person has within himself or herself the “power to increase the sum total of [the] world’s happiness
by giving a few words of sincere appreciation to someone who is lonely or discouraged.” Said he, “Perhaps you will forget tomorrow the kind words you say today, but the recipient may cherish them over a lifetime.”

Activity:  Write letters, emails, or cards to family members expressing the feelings of love you have for each of them.
choose gratitude

Day #5 Choose Gratitude

In the book of Luke, chapter 17, we read:

“And it came to pass, as he went to Jerusalem, that he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee.

“And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off:

“And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.

“And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed.

“And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God,

“And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan.

“And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine?

“There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger.

“And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.” (Luke 17:11–19.)

Activity:

Take a walk in nature and say everything you are grateful for that you might take for granted.  Say a prayer of gratitude, taking extra time to tell Heavenly Father of everything you are grateful for.

choose peace

Day #6 Choose Peace

John 14: 27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give not you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you.  Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

choose worship

Day #7 – Choose Worship

Isiah 58:18 refers to the Sabbath Day as a Delight.

When Isaiah described the Sabbath as “a delight,” he also taught us how to make it delightful. He said:

“If thou turn away
from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight,
and shalt honour [the Lord], not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:

“Then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord.”

Not pursuing your “own pleasure” on the Sabbath requires self-discipline. You may have to deny yourself of something you might like. If you choose to delight yourself in the Lord, you will not permit yourself to treat it as any other day. Routine and recreational activities can be done some other time.

What did the Savior mean when He said that “the sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath”?I believe He wanted us to understand that the Sabbath was His gift to us, granting real respite from the rigors of daily life and an opportunity for spiritual and physical renewal. God gave us this special day, not for amusement or daily labor but for a rest from duty, with physical and spiritual relief.

Take today and give it to the Lord.  Worship at church, play hymns of praise, read the holy scriptures, spend time with loved ones, visit the sick or needy – give this day to God.

choose joy

Day #8 Choose Joy

John 15: 11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, ad that your joy might be full.

James 1:2. Count it All Joy

Psalms 5:11 But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee.

Challenges have always been part of mortality and God’s plan for our growth. Through the power of the Atonement, we can still “be of good cheer.  Christ’s enabling power helps us feel happiness and cheer amid mortal gloom and doom. Misfortune and hardship lose their tragedy when viewed through the lens of the Atonement. The process could be explained this way: The more we know the Savior, the longer our view becomes. The more we see His truths, the more we feel His joy.” -Camille Fronk Olson

“In stories, as in life, adversity teaches us things we cannot learn otherwise. Adversity helps to develop a depth of character that comes in no other way. Our loving Heavenly Father has set us in a world filled with challenges and trials so that we, through opposition, can learn wisdom, become stronger, and experience joy.” – President Uchtdorf

Activity:

Take a moment to consider a challenge or trials in your life.  List ways that you can count it all joy.  Put sticky notes all over the house or the car that say JOY!!!!
choose light

Day #9 Choose Light

John 8:12  Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

“Even though we may feel lost in the midst of our current circumstances, God promises the hope of His light.” – President Uchtdorf

Choose The Light Talk

“You make choices every day and almost every hour that keep you walking in the light or moving away toward darkness.” – President Eyring

Object Lesson:
Materials Needed: Several battery powered tea lights.
Procedure: If possible, darken the room slightly. Turn on one tea light and place it in the middle of the table. Ask: What things can you do daily to invite the Spirit? (Pray, read scriptures, serve others, etc.) As each idea is shared, turn on another tea light and place it by the first one. When all the lights have been used, ask what would happen if more tea lights were turned on.

Liken the tea lights to the Spirit of the Lord. As we obey the commandments and participate in spiritual activities, we invite the Spirit and bring light into our lives.

choosoe obedience

Day #10 Choose Obedience

John 15: 10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love, even as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love.”

“Of all the lessons we learn from the life of the Savior, none is more clear and powerful than the lesson of obedience. – Robert D. Hales

“I experienced the joy of coming closer to the Savior and of His coming closer to me most often through simple acts of obedience to the commandments,” President Henry B. Eyring.

Activity:  Choose a recipe to bake together.  Talk about how important it is to follow the ingredients list and instructions so the recipe turns out right.  So too should we follow the commandments so we will “turn out” and be all that Heavenly Father wants us to be.

choose prayer

Day #11 Choose Prayer

Prayer is a supernal gift of our Father in Heaven to every soul. Think of it: the absolute Supreme Being, the most all-knowing, all-seeing, all-powerful personage, encourages you and me, as insignificant as we are, to converse with Him as our Father. Actually, because He knows how desperately we need His guidance, He commands, “Thou shalt pray vocally as well as in thy heart; yea, before the world as well as in secret, in public as well as in private. – Elder Richard G. Scott

Ask the family, if they were to mix up a cake batter, which tool they would rather use. Suggest that they could get the job done with the hand mixer, but it would take a lot more time to get the batter smooth. (Perhaps demonstrate this while preparing treats for afterwards.) It would also prove to be very tiring. The electric mixer would be much easier to use. This is because they would be using an additional power source to help with the work.

Point out that oftentimes we try to do things on our own without enlisting the help from our Heavenly Father. He is there for us anytime we are willing to plug into the power source. We will find the burden to be lighter when we seek the guidance and strength of the Lord.

Make a cake together as a family.

choose service

Cay #12 Choose Service

Matthew 25:40 – Verily I say aunt you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it” (Matthew 16:24–25; see also Matthew 10:39).

Our Savior teaches us to follow Him by making the sacrifices necessary to lose ourselves in unselfish service to others. – Elder Dallin H. Oaks

Take today to do something for someone else.  You can also check out JustServe.org for service ideas in your area.

choose grace

Day #13 Choose Grace

Grace is the help or strength given through the Atonement of the Lord Jesus Christ. Through the grace of God, everyone who has lived will be resurrected—our spirits will be reunited with our bodies, never again to be separated. Through His grace, the Lord also enables those who live His gospel to repent and be forgiven.  The grace of God helps us every day. It strengthens us to do good works we could not do on our own. The Lord promised that if we humble ourselves before Him and have faith in Him, His grace will help us overcome all our personal weaknesses

Story:

I was unloading the car after a trip to the grocery store, and our three-year-old daughter was helping. She was carrying in loaves of bread and cartons of eggs and was doing just fine. Then she decided that she was going to carry in a gallon of milk. After some struggle, she pulled it out of the car, and it landed with a thud on the driveway. She gripped the handle with both hands and heaved it. It barely budged. I offered to help, and she snapped at me: “No! I do it myself!” She strained and grunted but made no progress in lifting the milk. After several minutes she looked up at me with tears welling in her eyes and said, “Too heavy. Can’t do it.”

As I looked at my sweet, stubborn little girl, I saw in an instant what Heavenly Father must see in me—a well-meaning but stubborn child who wouldn’t accept His help. A scripture I had learned in seminary came to my mind:

“Behold, ye are little children and ye cannot bear all things now; ye must grow in grace and in the knowledge of the truth.

“Fear not, little children, for you are mine, and I have overcome the world, and you are of them that my Father hath given me;

“And none of them that my Father hath given me shall be lost” (D&C 50:40–42).

The significance of this is obvious, but the lesson became even more profound when my daughter’s eyes brightened and she said, “Mommy, you carry me; then I carry milk.” I scooped my little messenger up in my arms. I carried her, and leaning the jug against my arm, she carried the milk. In tears, I deposited my precious cargo inside.

Assignment:  Take time to notice Grace in your life, pray that you can receive this power.  Place a picture of Jesus where you can see it often.

choose to walk with christ

Day #14 Choose to Walk With Christ – everyday

Take time on this Easter Sunday to share your feelings about Jesus with your family, write in your journal how you’ve grown closer to Jesus over the past two weeks.  How will you continue this throughout the year?

A Tribute to My Nana and Memory Quilts in Her Rememberance

memory quilt tutorial

This month our family lost our sweet Nana at age 97.

DSC_0570
Nana has been a major part of my life since I was born.  She was a woman of faith and love, always caring more for others than herself.  She delighted in every day and found joy in the little things.

memory quilt 2We gathered as a family on March 20th, her birthday, to celebrate her life and to say our final goodbyes.  She lived an amazing life.

17359386_10208814304294668_2184816872791650572_o

Nana left a wonderful legacy especially to all her great-grandchildren who were blessed to be close to her.

IMG_4046

I wanted to make something to remember her by.  Nana was always a classy lady and always wore a blouse purchased from Macy’s.  She never owned a t-shirt or a sweatshirt, always a crisp blouse with a collar.  I had the idea to take all of her beautiful blouses and make them into memory quilts for each of the 4 women in our family.
memory quilt 7

The process of laundering, pressing, cutting, and sewing all of these blouses was very healing and I needed the hours spent on this project to help me feel close to Nana.  I thought it would be fun to share some photos of her wearing the blouses we used in the quilt.  She was just the sweetest!
nana

How to Make a Memory Quilt

All seams 1/4″

Each quilt is made up of 6″ squares.  There are 10 rows by 14 rows.  You need 140 squares total: 70 squares from the blouse fabrics and 70 squares from the background fabric.

IMG_0741

Gather up all the shirts or blouses you want to use and give them a good washing.  I tried to use only 100% cotton.  I think one was a rayon blend, and a few had a linen blend.  If you find you have blouses with stretch in them, you will need to stabilize with a light weight fusible stabilizer before cutting.

Because I was making 4 quilts, I needed my blouse fabrics to go far so I choose a quilting cotton to act as the background for the checkerboard design.  You will need 2 yards of the background fabric.

Cutting the Blouses

First cut the sleeve off along the sleeve/shoulder seam.

IMG_0828

Next, cut the cuff off along the seam.  Discard the cuff.

IMG_0829

Cut along the sleeve/arm seam and press.  This give you a nice flat surface to lay on your rotary mat.  I cut four 6″ squares out of each sleeve.
IMG_0830

Cut off the button strip and the button hole strip.  I am having the quilts machine quilted so I didn’t want any buttons or button holes getting in the way.  If you are hand quilting, you could leave elements of the shirt intact to give the quilt character.  I had my daughter cut off all the buttons and put them in a little box.  I may come up with a keepsake button project in the future!

IMG_0743 Cut off the collar.  If the shirt has pleats in the back you need to cut along the back seam as well so the pleats lay flat.

IMG_0737

This should give you a nice big piece of fabric to cut from.  Start cutting strips of 6″ then cross cut to give you 6″ squares.

A note about darts…..Most of the shirts did not have darts, a few did, however.  I did not include the dart in the 6″ block because it made the fabric lay weird and uneven.  You could also pick out the seam of the dart so it lays flat.

IMG_0738

Once you have all your 6″ blouse squares, cut the 2 yards of background fabric up into 6″ squares.  I let my girls lay out the quilts on the floor.  I wanted them to have a random look, so we tried to space the blacks, and pinks so they didn’t make a pattern.  It’s also helpful if you let your cat in on the project 🙂

IMG_0782

Sew the squares together in rows, and press.  I pin numbers on to the first square in each row so I won’t get them mixed up.  I pressed the seams toward the odd number and away from the even number.  If I do this I don’t get mixed up either!  Pin each row together matching the seam intersections.  Sew the rows together and press all the seams going in one direction.  The finished quilt measures 55″ x 82.5″
memory quilt

I choose matching minky to go on the back of each quilt so they are super soft and cuddly.  I envisioned these quilts becoming the quilts the family fights over when it’s movie night or the first quilt you grab when you are going to the park or the beach.  They are made to be used & loved so we can think of Nana often 🙂

memory quilt 6

I hope this inspires you to make something special for your family!

This one is my favorite picture because it looks like it might be on the farm in Kansas where Nana grew up….and now the tears 🙂

Quilt Petite Blog Hop

quilt-petite-blog-hop-banner

I’m so excited to be the next stop on the ‘Quilt Petite’ Blog Hop!!!  Sedef Imer of Down Grapevine has just released this adorable little quilt book! It is filled with the cutest projects and ideas – it’s just fun to look through again and again!

quilt-petite

It was difficult to choose just one project to feature here.  Since I am in full Christmas decorating mode, I thought a holiday twist would be fun!  I chose the Petal Burst Table Topper pattern, used traditional red and green colors, and turned it into a quilted pillow!  The fabrics I chose are from a variety of Bonnie & Camille fabric lines.

poinsettia-pillow
poinsettia-pillow-4

To speed up the pillow making process, I choose to applique the petals with Heat n Bond Lite.

img_6793

Once the petals were fused, I sewed around each petal with matching thread.

img_6794

I quilted around the flower and then cut the pillow top down to 20″ square.

img_6885

To finish the pillow, I cut the pillow back 20″ and inserted a zipper toward the bottom.  I placed the pillow top and back wrong sides together and basted 1/8″ all the way around the pillow.  I then added binding – just like a normal quilt.  Once it was done I popped a 20″ pillow inside.  I LOVE it!!

Apple Picking Quilt Tutorial

apple coverToday is my turn on the Apple Farm blog hop with Elea Lutz and Penny Rose Fabrics!!!!!  I have always been a fan of Elea Lutz’s designs and I was thrilled to meet her in person at Quilt Market!  She is the cutest ever!  IMG_8213

I love Elea’s newest line called Apple Farm.  It has such a fun vintage feel!

Screen Shot 2016-08-18 at 10.02.05 PMI choose to work with the reds from this collection.  I have a vintage red and white quilt from my Great Grandmother and it was sort of the inspiration for my design.

The quilt measures 37″ square and it’s perfect to throw over a couch, place on a table, or hang on a wall.

IMG_2920

Let’s get started!!

Supplies:

Fat quarters or quarter yard cuts of 2 red prints

3/4  yard solid white fabric

1/2 yard red swiss dot fabric

fat quarter red gingham

scraps of green and brown

1/2 yard plaid border print

1/3 yard binding

1 1/2 yard backing

Heat n Bond Lite

Sizzix HST die and apple die

The quilt block is made of of 3 parts:  The center block, the “economy block” and the half square triangle (HST)  block.  All seams are 1/4″

For the HST block…

You will need 48 HST consisting of solid white and the darker red print.  I used my 2 1/2″ HST Sizzix Die.  You can literally cut all the HST you need in 30 seconds!  If you don’t have access to this die, just make 48 HST that finish 2 1/2″ square.

I love the Sizzix die because the squares finish perfectly even and no trimming or squaring up!

Mufasa was very helpful in the chain piecing!IMG_2866

Cut (16) 2 1/2″ squares out of solid white.

Lay the block out like this:

IMG_2882

Sew together as you would a 4-Patch.  It is helpful to press the seams open to reduce bulk.  You need 16 total of these blocks.

For the Economy Block….

Cut (16) 4 1/2″ squares from the lighter red print.

Cut (64) 2 1/2″ squares from the solid white.  Draw a diagonal line on the back of each white square.IMG_2877

Position a 2 1/2″ square in the corner of the 4 1/2″ red square.  Sew along the diagonal line.  Repeat this process for each of the 4 corners.  Trim 1/4″ along the seam, and press.   IMG_2884

For the centers…

Cut (4) 4 1/2″ squares of solid white.  Don’t applique the apple until the block is sewn because it will overlap slightly.

Lay out the block like this:IMG_2885

Sew together in rows.  Press seams open.  Make four of these blocks.

For the apple applique…

Fuse Heat n Bond Lite to the wrong side of the red gingham.  Position the gingham on the apple die diagonally.  Trim off the stem and the leaf.  Make four of these.  Repeat this process and die cut the leaf and the stem with the appropriate colors of fabric.

IMG_2893

Peel off the backing paper and position in the center of the block.  Heat set in place.  Sew around each piece twice with desired thread color.

For the sashing and borders…

Cut (2) 12 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ pieces for center sashing.

Cut (5) 2 1/2″ x WOF strips for sashing and borders.  I didn’t measure the borders, just sew and cut off the excess.  Press toward the sashing.

IMG_2889

Cut (4) 4 1/2″ x WOF strips of the plaid.  Sew the sides, press, then the top and bottom, trimming off the extra each time.  Quilt as desired.IMG_2890

I love how this quilt turned out and I love the red & white feel of it without it being totally red and white!  I think the plaid border is my favorite!!

IMG_2911

OK – I totally love this pattern!  I’m going to make it again for sure!

Day #11 – Guest Contributor Calee Reed

410826

Today the amazingly talented, fabulous Calee Reed is sharing her thoughts with us on our Walk With Christ.  My daughter and I first learned of Calee last year at Time Out For Girls.  Calee’s messages and music opened my daughter’s eyes to the world of Christian music.  I can truly say our lives have been changed since knowing Calee.  Just a little bit about Calee:  Calee Reed grew up in San Diego, California, and was taught to sing by her mother at a very young age. When Calee’s mother passed away in 2011 after a battle with cancer, Calee decided to write her first CD, The Waiting Place, as a tribute to her. Her upcoming album, What Heaven Feels Like, features inspirational songs in Calee’s fresh style and releases in summer 2015. Calee and her husband, Shaun, live in Salt Lake City and have one adorable daughter, Violet .

You MUST watch Calee’s amazing music video inspired by the story of her mother.

You can follow Callee on Facebook and Instagram (@caleereed), blog, and website

From Calee

I found myself frazzled and tired last week as I chased my two year old around our neighborhood park. She’s sweet and darling, but she has GERD (a condition that she was supposed to have outgrown by 3 months old) which causes her to wake frequently at night
which causes us both to be grumpy and exhausted most of the time. That morning I was feeling especially overwhelmed and inadequate. When will she outgrow this?? How can we be expected to function normally when our sleeping schedule is so erratic?? Why haven’t we found a cure yet for her issues?? Frustrated thoughts tumbled around in my head.

My new visiting teacher had asked me to meet her at the park that morning so we could chat about this month’s message. I was on the verge of texting and canceling (in favor of escaping back home to my sweatpants and couch) when she appeared. Smiling and friendly, she talked about her kids and asked about my family. After only a few minutes, I found myself cradling my wailing baby and apologizing for needing to take her home to attempt a nap. “Oh, that’s alright!” she sweetly responded, “Let me share a quick part of the message with you!”

She proceeded to share a few thoughts from President Dieter F Uchtdorf about patience:

“Patience is not passive resignation, nor is it failing to act because of our fears. Patience means active waiting and enduring
Patience is not simply enduring; it is enduring well!”

“Patience means accepting that which cannot be changed and facing it with courage, grace, and faith. It means being ‘willing to submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon [us], even as a child doth submit to his father’ [Mosiah 3:19]. Ultimately, patience means being ‘firm and steadfast, and immovable in keeping the commandments of the Lord’ [1 Nephi 2:10] every hour of every day, even when it is hard to do so.”1

I could tell that she had read the message prior to us meeting, and had purposely chosen those few thoughts to share – even though she couldn’t have known my specific situation prior to us meeting. The words from that inspired man sunk deep into my heart. I had read and shared the message with my own visiting teaching sisters earlier in the month, but at that moment I was ready to hear a different message that Heavenly Father had sent to my heart. The questions that had been plaguing me a moment ago found themselves quieted in the light of new perspective. I was so grateful that this woman from my congregation had taken a moment to acquaint herself with those words and share them with me.

As I’ve contemplated the ways I ‘Walk With Christ’ through service in my daily life, I’ve come to the conclusion that one of the most important ways I can serve is through being prepared to share the messages of the Savior with people around me – just like my visiting teacher did with me.

I have the incredible opportunity to travel around the country with some intensely spiritual, inspired individuals as a presenter with the Time Out for Women program through Deseret Book. I love when presenters quote scripture and the words of prophets; knowing that God sent those messages and words for me brings added peace and power when I hear them. I have watched these individuals present their prepared messages, converse backstage and with the attendees of the events and have felt so inspired by them. These individuals know the words of Christ to well, and love the words of Christ so much, that they are able to share with power and confidence specific messages from scripture and/or prophets at any given moment. It’s become a personal goal of mine to study each day to become more like them.

One of the ways I’ve found to share/serve in this way is through social media. I am the main contributor to an LDS Instagram account! It might sound silly, but searching out quotes, making memes and posting them daily for the 2k+ followers of the account brings me a lot of joy and fulfilment – plus it helps me stay on track with my goal of daily studying! Often I find myself searching for the quotes and memes in the middle of the night while waiting for my toddler to fall back asleep. It brings me peace and perspective, and brings a little light into the social media feeds of the people who see the messages each day. I’ve seen endless ward and stake accounts, accounts run by youth, accounts run by Bishops, all geared toward bringing inspired words and messages to their friends and/or congregations.

We can impact the lives of those around us with immeasurable good when we acquaint ourselves with the words and teachings of prophets, leaders and scripture and find the courage to share them when prompted. We don’t have to be scriptorians or religious scholars, we only need the desire to live up to our baptismal covenants and small daily goals like reading our scriptures, the Ensign, or messages on LDS.org, like my visiting teacher did! The healing, the light and the peace that sharing those messages and teachings can bring into the lives of others constitute service of great importance. If we truly strive to be the disciples of Christ, we will walk in His footsteps – a part of which is familiarizing ourselves with His words, and the words of His called servants, and then sharing those thoughts to lift everyone around us.
