Day #7- Family Service Project

Today’s lesson comes from my friend Brittany.  She is my super talented friend who is the worlds best decorater!!!  You should follow her on Pinterest, Instagram and her Blog!!

Thank You Amanda for inviting me to participate in the 14 day walk with Christ. I am really excited to share an amazing experience of service that as a family we have been able to participate in.

This past month I was browsing Instagram and came across a heartbreaking story of a little girl named “Kycie” she is 4 years old.   (You can follow their story on Instagram @JandJterry)  We have a little 4 year old in our family as well so it really made us stop and take a moment as we watched her story unfold. This sweet little girl who was thought to have the flu, however she didn’t start getting better in fact she worsened and started to have seizures. She ended up being life-flighted to Primary Children’s Hospital. The Dr’s diagnosed her with type 1-diabetes and after the damaging seizures thought she may have permanent brain damage as well.

Meet Kycie:

Screen Shot 2015-03-24 at 9.54.00 PM I have been so impressed with the constant faith and optimism this family shows. They just recently posted this picture:

Screen Shot 2015-03-24 at 9.55.09 PM Her mom writes: If we have faith in Jesus Christ the hardest as well as the easiest times in life can be a blessing. The Savior has carried Kycie (and each one of us) through this journey in our life. And for that, I am grateful.

As I read each of her updates on Instagram I can feel her love for her daughter, it radiates off the page. It reminds me of a song there is sunshine in my soul today.

As a family we decided that we needed to show the Terry family some love and support and to let them know we are praying for them and thinking of their sweet little girl Kycie.

We put together a little care package and each of my kids wrote a letter to Kycie and her family. We wanted to send a little light and a little sunshine to their family, in their time of need.

YW Camp Treasure The Truth Re Cap

It’s time to start preparing for this year’s Young Women’s Camp.  I thought I would write about our 2014 camp for any of those Camp Directors out there looking for ideas.  Our camp was AWESOME!  We had fabulous leaders, a great camp, and super fun activities.  Our theme was “Treasure the Truth”.  It was fun to use the idea of “treasure” for inspiration.  As you scroll through this post you can click on each section for more ideas – I didn’t want this to turn into the world’s longest blog post.  I hope you enjoy learning about our camp.

Our camp is a traditional camp in the mountains with a lodge and cabins.  We had access to a small lake and canoes, rock wall, archery, BB guns, volleyball, swimming, hiking, and crafts.  Below are ideas we added to enhance camp.

This is our camp logo.  Click HERE to download a high resolution version, you are welcome to adapt it to your needs.treasure the truth logoCamp Check in

Each level was a Gemstone based on a Young Women Value.  Click HERE to download all the gemstone printables.

When we got to camp we had a treasure hunt where the girls received their bandanas, itineraries, songbooks, and other camp goodies like CANDY!  I went into LA and bought colored lace the colors of the values.  I cut them into triangles.  They were super cute.

The Young Women Camp Manual has been around for a while and I know some years girls don’t even bring them to camp.  I wanted to breath new life into the camp manual so we turned them into scrapbooks or smash books.  The treasure hunt ended in the lodge where we had tables set up and tons of scrapbooking & paper crafting supplies.  The girls got to decorate their camp manuals!  I had also printed out photos from the past few years.  The girls were encouraged to carry their manual with them at all times at camp.  Throughout the week we had handouts and quotes they could glue in their manuals.  This is mine:

I put tabs on the sides so I can easily find each level and other requirements.  Mine is loaded with pictures.  I love looking at it!!!

When we kicked off our theme on the first day, we introduced our “Treasure Board”.  The leaders had made this before camp.  It’s a HUGE frame with a collage of material treasures.  The goal during the week was to cover the material treasures with spiritual treasures.  By the end of the week the board was covered with religious pictures, quotes, and uplifting pictures.  I love the idea of visualizing what our heart treasures.

T-Shirts – We tried to save on cost by not having official camp shirts.  We gave each level a white V-neck shirt and they were to create their shirt based on their value gemstone.  I love this idea!  It was so fun to all the creativity!

Of course I tie-dyed the leader’s shirts

Crafts: Our crafts were the best so far.  Again, money was tight.  We asked for donations and then created crafts out of what we received.  The girls had a BLAST!  Click HERE to see all the crafts we made.

Meet Gemma Diamond our Camp mascot.  Every evening at dinner the stake leaders did a silly skit/dance with Gemma.  Gemma got to go home with a different level each night.  She brought with her a letter, something for each girl to wear, and an owl pin to add to their lanyards.  The first night she brought tiaras, the second night large YW paper medallions, the third night capes, and the fourth night missionary badges.

We had “Treasured Value” rotations where the girls rotated listening to an uplifting message based on a value.  At each rotation they received a handout to put in their camp manual and a gemstone bead to put in their bottle necklace.  The necklaces were really cute, but many of the girls played with them and they broke.  I would hand these out at the end.  But I love having a bottle necklace with the value gems in it!

In the lodge we had an area designated for “Treasured Sisters”.  This was to replace our traditional “Secret Sisters”.  Instead of shopping and bringing gifts to camp, we drew names at camp and encouraged the young women to make something for their sister at camp.  The sisters were not secret and the girls introduced themselves at the beginning.  For the most part it worked, some of the girls were shy and didn’t approach their sister for a few days.  We were inspired by the Frozen movie’s Elsa and Anna 🙂  Click HERE fore the treasured sisters form.  Every day we had paper and pens where they could write notes and we had a little item they could give their sister, like candy or a pin.

One night we had a Faith Walk.  I have seen many versions of this but ours was AMAZING!  We had 5 vignettes around the camp. A Nephite woman who was there when Jesus came, Mary the mother of Jesus, the blind man who Jesus healed, the young Joseph Smith, and the woman who touched Jesus robe.  Many of our actors also sang a song that went with their character.  The young women were asked not to talk while they walked on the journey.  It was very powerful.  We lit the whole camp with paper bag lanterns, 500 to be exact.  And then at night we turned them all off, and we liked them so much we turned them on each night!

Faith Walk YW campCamp was amazing and I did not want to come home.  The young women in our stake are so AWESOME!  The Sunday after camp we have an awards night and slideshow.  All the families are invited, we watch a slide show of all the pictures.  Then each girl who completed her certification received an award.  We give them a level charm that they can add to a bracelet or necklace, a certificate, and a camp photo to add to their manual.  Click HERE  to download a generic certificate.  I like that the certificates are smaller so they can be glued into the camp manual.certificate YW camp award 2

If a girl has completed 6years of camp she gets a gold or silver pinecone to wear alongside her Young Womenhood Recognition Medallion.

14 Day Walk With Christ 2013

Welcome to the 14 Day Walk With Christ 2013 Lesson plans.
Every Easter my family does a “14 Day Walk With Christ”.  This takes place the 2 weeks leading up to Easter.  I feel like life is so busy and rushed, if I don’t make myself do this, Easter comes and goes and we haven’t focused on the importance of it.  Here’s how it works:

Each egg will contain a topic for that day that will help my family come closer to Christ in preparation for Easter.  After school, or that evening, we will have some kind of small lesson and activity about the day’s topic.  During every lesson, the children will recieve a handout to put in a little journal.  Then they will record their feelings that day.

My goal is at the end of the two weeks, they have a little journal about their thoughts and feelings of Jesus Christ.  On Easter morning, I am planning a sunrise hike to the top of the hill by hour house.  We will bring our journals and reflect on what we wrote during the two weeks then add a final entry as we share our feelings about Jesus Christ on Easter morning.
Who wants to join me?

Every morning during the 2 weeks leading up to Easter I will be posting the day’s topic and lesson outline with a printable handout.  I think this will be a great experience for our families!!

Christ-like Attributes: Patience

Today is Day 7 of the 14 Day Walk With Christ.  I hope you are enjoying the lessons, my family is loving them!  Even if you don’t get to all of them, you can use them for Family Home Evening lessons.

Lesson # 7 Christ-like Attributes: Patience
Preparation:  Purchase a large bag of candy (M&Ms, Skittles, Gumi Bears, etc.)  Put a few in a bowl and set them out at the beginning of the lesson.  Tell your family if they wait and don’t eat the candy in the bowl, they can have a better reward later.  Wrap or tie a bow on the large bag and reward it at the end of the lesson.

I love this saying, “Patience is not about how long you can wait, but how you behave while waiting.

Scriptures:
Psalms 27:14 When I wait you strengthen my heart.

James 1: 3-4
Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.

But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may beaperfect and entire, wanting nothing.

Lesson:
What is Patience?
Patience is the capacity to endure delay, trouble, opposition, or suffering without becoming angry, frustrated, or anxious.  It is the ability to do God’s will and accept His timing.  Patience is related to Hope and faith; you must wait for the Lord’s promised blessings to be fulfilled; Actually, when we are unduly impatient, we are suggesting that we know what is best – better than does God. Or, at least, we are asserting that our timetable is better than his. Either way we are questioning the reality of God’s omniscience.

    Show a picture of Jesus

The Lord, Jesus Christ, is our perfect example of patience. Though absolutely unyielding in adherence to the truth, he exemplified patiencerepeatedly during his mortal ministry. He was patient with his disciples, including the Twelve, despite their lack of faith and their slowness to recognize and understand his divine mission. He was patient with the multitudes as they pressed about him, with the woman taken in sin, with those who sought his healing power, and with little children. Finally, he remained patient through the sufferings of his mock trials and his crucifixion. – Joseph B. Wirthlin

Testify to your family that patience is one way we come to be more Christlike. Remind your family that patience gives us the hope that Christ’s Atonement will save us.

    Role play, charades, or scenarios
Brainstorm with your family situations in which it might be easy to “loose their patience”.  My children love playing charades, each child will come up with a scenario and act it out.  You can also role play, or just discuss situations that make them feel impatient.

Show the videoContinuing in Patience” by Dieter F. Uchtdorf
Talk about the dish of candy – was it hard to wait?  Was it hard not to sneak just one piece?  Give the children the large bag of candy and explain that it is always worth waiting patiently for something better.
Game:  Play Chutes & Ladders or Candyland or a similar type board games (don’t you agree, these games strengthen patience!!!)

    Consider the Lilies, Day #4

Hi! I am Rachel from Family Ever After. I love Easter, and I’m happy to be a guest on Amanda’s blog!
Easter is a special time in our home, and this year I am making a concentrated effort to help my children understand why it is that we truly celebrate Easter. It is such a neat time to learn about the last week of Christ’s life spent ministering on Earth. There is so much symbolism to be found…

Spring (newness of life), the Sun (Jesus is the light of the world), Easter Grass (mortality doesn’t last forever, it withers like the grass, Christ offers Eternal Life), Easter Eggs (newness of life, resurrection), Lambs (Lamb of God, Good Shepherd), Flowers (many important events happened in gardens- the Fall in the Garden of Eden, the Atonement in the Garden of Gethsemane, the Resurrection in the Garden of the Empty Tomb). In this blog post, I am focusing on the Easter Lily, and how it relates to the phrase, “He is Risen.”

    LESSON: EASTER LILY
    Content-
Lilies are Easter flowers because they teach and remind us of Christ in 3 ways.
    1. Consider the Lilies of the Field- Faith in Christ
While Jesus lived on the earth, he taught, through the imagery of lilies, about having faith in
Him: “And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they
grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: …Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the
field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe
you, O ye of little faith? Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? Or, What
shall we drink? Or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? …for your heavenly Father knoweth
that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his
righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” Matthew 6:28, 30-33.
When we see the lilies, we can remember that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ know us, and they know our needs. When we have faith in Jesus Christ, He will provide for us in all that we need.
    2. Bulbs to Blooms- Burial to Resurrection
Lilies are flowers that grow from bulbs. Bulbs stay buried in the ground all winter, and in
spring blossom forth with beautiful life. Jesus was buried in a tomb for three days, and then
came forth in a perfect form, having immortal life. Lilies remind us of this miracle and
symbolize the hope we have of everlasting life through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.” Jesus Christ rose from the dead, and provided a way for all of us to rise again after we die.
    3. Trumpet Ushers in the Second Coming of Christ
Lilies are shaped like what instrument? (trumpets) “In the scriptures, trumpets are used to sound warnings, proclaim news, and herald visitors. Moroni holds a horn to his lips with his right hand, symbolizing both the spreading of the gospel throughout the world and the long-anticipated Second Coming of the Savior, which will be announced by trumpet-blowing angels” (“Looking Up to Moroni” by Wendy Kenney, November 2009 New Era).
The trumpet shape of the lily reminds us that trumpets will herald (announce) the second coming of Christ.
Matthew 24:31 “And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.”
Joel 2:1 “Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the Lord cometh, for it is nigh at hand.”

    Craft-
    Make handprint lilies.
Supplies needed: paper, markers, glitter, yellow and green pipe cleaners, tape, scissors.
Directions: Trace hands on white paper. Allow children to color and decorate as desired. Cut out as many as you want for the lily blooms. Roll the handprint vertically to form a funnel shape. Secure the side with clear tape. Roll each finger down to form the curls of each bloom. Cut yellow pipe cleaner ~3” (1 for each bloom). Loosely curve the yellow piece to form a U shape. Wrap the top of a green pipe cleaner at the bottom of the U. Curl the ends of the yellow cleaner to form the center of the bloom. Insert the completed green stem into the center of the bloom and pull through. Display the
lilies in a vase or wrap with a ribbon.
I hope you find this useful, perhaps as a Family Home Evening lesson, or a Primary lesson in church. May you have a happy Easter!

Stand in Holy Places Chicken Wire Frame

I bought this rather large frame at a garage sale for a few dollars.  I wanted to make it into some kind of collage/bulletin board.  I love chicken wire and this was the perfect frame for it.  All I did was snip the chicken wire with wire cutters the size of the frame.  Then I used a staple gun to secure the wire to the back of the frame.  Took about 5 minutes!!

For the past 19 years where ever we have traveled we have made it a point to visit the nearest LDS Temple.  I printed out photos from every temple we’ve been too….from Hawaii to New York!  Since this year’s mutual theme is “Stand ye in Holy Places”, I thought it would be fun to gather all the photos and create a memory board.

I found this graphic for free at Hang a Ribbon on The Moon.   I used silver binder clips to attach everything to the chicken wire.  The nice thing about this is it is so easy to switch out. The possibilities are endless!

I have noticed friends who visit my home enjoy looking at all the different temples and where they are located….friends of our faith and friends of other faiths.  Having this hanging in our home serves a reminder of what is important in our family and what we should be focusing on.

    Day #9 Miracles

    Attention Activity:
Spread out a quilt or blanket and have everyone come sit on it.  (It would be fun to do this outside if the weather permits.)  Tell everyone you are going on a pretend picnic.  Then play the following game:
The person that is “It”  begins by saying, “Hi, my name is ___________ and I am going on a picnic.  I am bringing my _______________.  Ahead of time the “It” person thinks of a pattern that the others in the group must guess.  For example, she could say her name is Amanda and she is bringing her Aunt to the picnic.  The pattern would be you bring something that begins with the letter of your first name to the picnic.  Then it goes to the next person and the next person says, “Hi my name is ________ and I am bringing my __________ to the picnic, may I come?”  If the 2nd person has figured out the pattern, the “It” person will say, “Yes.”  This continues until everyone can come to the picnic.  You can start a new round and the next “It” player can decide a new pattern.  Examples are: Choosing things in alphabetical order, choosing things with 2 syllables, choosing things with double letters, choosing items in a certain food group or category.  You can also make this more challenging by having each player repeat what has been said before them, “Hi, I am Amanda and I am going on a picnic.  I am bringing, apples, bananas, cherries, and dates.”  The pattern here is alphabetical fruit!  This might be hard for small children, so adapt as necessary.
    Scripture Discussion:
In the bible during Jesus’ time, there is a story about a different kind of picnic.  There were many people following Jesus all day, watching him perform miracles.  They became very, very hungry and there wasn’t anywhere to buy food or enough money if it were possible to purchase it.
Read the Story of the Miracle of the Loaves and Fishes in  John 6:5-13 and Mark 6:34-44
How many people were gathered together?
    Where did they sit?
Where did they find the fish and the loaves?
    What size were they?
    Was everyone able to eat?
Who did Jesus ask to give the food to the multitude?
How much food was left over?
What would you have thought if you were part of the 5,000 people?
Christ’s miracles offered a proof that He is the Messiah, the Son of God.  He said, “The works that I do in my Father’s name, they bear witness of me”.  Through miracles mankind “might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing…might have life through His name.” (John 20:31)
“Have our children felt the power of the Savior’s miracles? Jesus healed the leper, gave sight to the blind.  He fed the 5,000,  calmed the sea, and raised Lazarus from the dead.  Do our children believe that “it is by faith that miracles are wrought,” and do they pray for miracles in their own lives? Elder Neal L. Andersen
If you have time and your children are a little bit older, you can do this Miracles of Jesus matching game.  It would also be nice to discuss more of Jesus’ miracles or even watch a few brief videos depicting the miracles.
    Are there Miracles today?  YES!!!
“Miracles come to those who have faith.  Remember, faith proceeds and produces miracles for which we have no immediate explanation within our experience.” Elder Marcus B. Nash.
Talk about miracles you have seen in your life and in your family.  Explain that miracles are very personal.
    Activity:  Faith Fish
Print and cut out the fish.  Attach a paperclip to each one.  Attach a maganet to a piece of string and attach it to a sitck or dowel (make a fishing pole).  Have each of the children take turns “fishing”.  You can set up a sheet or fish over the back of the couch or off the stairs, etc.  When the child catches a fish, have them read what is on the fish and tell how that can help us build our faith so we can recieve miracles in our life.

Handout: Click HERE for fish and handout
    Journal:
What is your favorite miracle of Jesus?  Write down miracles you have received in your life.  What can we do to increase our faith in Jesus so we can receive more miracles.

    Day #5 Repentance

Today’s lesson comes from my friend, Brittany.  Brittany is super talented: she has amazing taste, great style, and lots of fun ideas.  She is busy with her four darling children and has deleted her blog….gasp!!  I hope to feature more of Brittany’s creations here at Jedi Craft Girl!!  Here are a few photos I snapped at her house today:

    Day #5 Repentance

    Attention Story:
(You may want to hold up a $20 bill and demonstrate as you read the story.)

A well known speaker started off his seminar by holding up a $20 bill.
In the room of 200, he asked, “Who would like this $20 bill?”
Hands started going up. He said, “I am going to give this $20 to one of you but first, let me do this.” He proceeded to crumple the dollar bill up. He then asked, “Who still wants it?” Still the hands were up in the air.
“Well,” he replied, “what if I do this?” And he dropped it on the ground and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe. He picked it up, now crumpled and dirty. “Now who still wants it?” Still the hands went into the air.
“My friends, you have all learned a very valuable lesson. No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value. It was still worth $20.
Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt by the decisions we make and the circumstances that come our way. We feel as though we are worthless. But no matter what has happened or what will happen, you will never lose your value in God’s eyes.  To Him, dirty or clean, crumpled or finely creased, you are still priceless to Him.
    Scripture:
Isaiah 1:18 “Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.”
    Activity:
In this experiment we teach our children how Christ took our sins upon him in the Garden of Gethsemane.  Through this activity, we can teach our children how Jesus can help us each individually become clean from our daily sins.
     Supplies:
    Water
    Food Coloring
    Bleach
    Alka-Seltzer
Teach the children that like this glass of water, we come into the world pure, but everyone makes mistakes and everyone sins.  When we sin, we become unclean.  Add a few drops of red food coloring.  (You can use as many colors as you want to create the effect.)  By dropping this into the water it represents our sins.  Talk about actions that might cause us to become unclean; such as being unkind to others, being dishonest, or using bad language.  When we have sinned, it’s hard to feel the spirit.  The world becomes confusing.
What can we do to become clean again?
We can ask the Savior to help us to overcome our mistakes.  During the Atonement, Jesus Christ became the great and eternal sacrifice for our sins.
We can call on Christ to help us and to take away our sins.  Add a cup of bleach representing Christ’s Atonement.  Then add an Alka-Seltzer (repentance) to the water.  Watch the change before your eyes.  Soon the water will be clear and pure once again.  The Atonement really can change us that quickly, but it does take action on our part.  We must act in faith by repenting of our sins in the name of Jesus Christ.

Write in your journal how you feel about the repentance process.  What does it mean to you that, because of Jesus, you can be forgiven of your sins?
