Halloween Wreath

The girls over at Eighteen25 are showcasing a new Halloween Project Tutorial everyday.  I decided to make one of the projects.  It’s a Halloween wreath.  Click HERE to see their featured wreath and tutorial.  This is my version!!

Start with a wreath from the dollar store.  Eighteen25 used a foam wreath – this woven wreath is all our dollar store had.  Then get black and white fabric.  I tore mine in 4″ x WOF strips.  I used about 5 strips.

Hot glue the fabric every so often, kind of bunching it together where you glue it.  (I only burned myself 4 times!!!)

Go all the way around the wreath, then glue fabric around the inside and then the outside using the same bunch & glue technique.

Next  cut a 12×12 piece of Halloween paper into 4″ strips – you need three strips.  I scored each strip every half inch.  Then accordion fold the strips, glue them together to form a large rosette.

I hot glued a piece of black spiderweb paper into the center.

I added a vintage Halloween card to the front.  You can decorate it any way you want.  I think the fabric glued to the wreath is such a cheap, fast, easy base for any wreath for any occasion!!

Charlotte’s Spooky Garden

Today begins the Charlottte’s Spooky Garden sew along! Each week we are focusing on a different portion of the quit!

The original pattern, Charlotte’s Garden, uses Leafy Keen fabric which I love.

I wrote special cutting instructions for the Halloween version.

I love the Halloween version! Join me on Instagram for sewing tips each week as we make this quilt in August!

Self Pawtrait Softie

If you know me you know I love cats! So when my friend Pam from Pammie Jane wrote a sewing book all about cats I had to get my paws on it! You will love every project in her book – from quilts to zipper pouches to pillows – there is something for every cat lover! And her photography is amazing!!

I made this fun little kitty softie and I love the creativity of adding a Dresden Plate to the side of the cat! Brilliant!

I made my kitty with Mod Meow fabrics and Riley Blake charcoal linen. I was thinking this kitty would be super cute in black velvet and halloween colors for the Dresden Plate!

Mufasa is thrilled to have another cat around the house!

I just keep thinking how cute these kitties would be for all seasons and holidays! What if you turned the Dresden Plate into a sunflower!! So many fun paw-sibilities!!

Make sure to check out all the other bloggers who made projects from Pam’s Purr-fect Patchwork book!

Spellbound Quilt

Make sure you pick up a copy of Quilts and More which hits news stands today! My Spellbound Quilt Pattern is in it!

I used Scaredy Cat by Riley Blake Designs for the fabric. The quilt is an alternating block pattern that creates a chain design.

I love that the pattern isn’t just for Halloween, but you could easily make it with Christmas fabrics or red and blue fabrics!

Mufasa loves it too! He’s just mad he’s not in the magazine 🙂

Cat Head Quilt Block Mini Quilt

cat mini quilt

I recently went off social media for 10 days as a challenge.  Don’t get me wrong, I love me some Instagram!  However I completely enjoyed having no outside influences coming into my brain throughout the day!  I was able to let my own mind decide what I wanted or needed to do.  I found myself spending time finishing little projects and catching up on family photo albums.  Several years ago I made a Halloween Cat Head Block quilt and I recently found 6 stray cat blocks!  I put them together in a little quilt to hang in my sewing room.

I love the retro feeling the pop of aqua gives!  It’s by Camelot and is perfect for the little 1″ setting squares!

I’m so not a plant person but we are trying to grow these cute little succulents!  So darling!

Do you think I am turning into a crazy cat lady?  Maybe I’ve passed up crazy!!!

I Love Cats {Quilt Pattern}

I am so totally super excited to be sharing this pattern today!  Meet “I Love Cats” – the quilt pattern!  This quilt has been a labor of love and has been a long time in the making!  I was first inspired by this amazing bundle of Cotton + Steel woven gingham fat quarters.  I knew I wanted something to totally show my love for gingham.  Then my love for cats creeped in and I knew this was the perfect quilt!IMG_1923

Then I started decorating for fall and I knew this quilt would look amazing in a Halloween version!

“Flower Patchy” a Half Square Triangle Mini Quilt Pattern

flower patchy

Sometimes you just need some cute fabrics and a fun little project to brighten your day!  I received my Cotton Crate shipment in the mail and it was filled with Riley Blake Designs’ Calico Days!  I was super excited to make a little quilt using just what came in the box!  calico days quilt

Every month Cotton Crates will deliver a box of 12 high quality fat quarters right to your door!  I loved having everything coordinated so I could jump right into sewing, instead of auditioning fabrics all afternoon!  This is the perfect little quilt to put on a table, fold over a chair, or add to your mini quilt wall!  It could also change with the seasons, I’m thinking Halloween with pumpkins or Christmas with trees, or nautical with anchors!  This is also the perfect go-to pattern when you need a hand made gift.  I did not lay out my fabrics ahead of time, I wanted it to look scrappy.

calico days quilt. 20

Let’s get started on this fun little project!

12 fat quarters, these cuties are from Calico Days by Riley Blake Designs

Sizzix 4 1/2″ half square triangle die

Sizzix Flower & Leaves Bigz die

Heat n Bond Lite

1/2 yard binding

1 yard backing

All seams 1/4″, Finished Quilt 28″ square

I am so in love with the Sizzix Half Square Triangle (HST) dies!  I can’t believe it took me this long to finally try it.  I always thought I didn’t need this die because there are so many fast ways to make HSTs!  WRONG!  This die is amazing!  It is notched right at the 1/4″ so there are no little dog ears to cut off.  Which means the triangles line up and match up PERFECTLY!  NO SQUARING UP AFTER!  This is such a fast way to cut these.  And you can cut 6 layers at one time!  Follow the diagram below for step by step instructions:

sizzix hst

I have heard  people say that die cutting triangles wastes fabric.  Not here!  Cut the fabric in strips 5″ wide.  Once cut there is only a tiny amount of fabric left.

calico days quilt. 4

The HST  is 4 1/2″ square which means it finishes at 4″ once in a quilt.

Once all your HSTs are put together, cut 9 low volume squares 4 1/2″.  This is the background for the applique.

Using the left over pieces of the fat quarters, cut small pieces and fuse Heat n Bond Lite to the back.

calico days quilt. 9

You can use any flower shape, I choose to use this one:

Screen Shot 2016-03-25 at 8.42.25 AM

Make sure you have your cat do all your die cutting so it will be purrrrrrrfect 🙂

calico days quilt. 13         Once you have cut the flowers, peel off the baking paper and fuse them to the 4 1/2″ squares.  Top stitch around each piece. calico days quilt. 12

Mufasa really can’t get enough of the Sizzix machine!  I am super careful so we don’t get our paws pinched.  calico days quilt. 14

Lay the quilt out in 7 rows of 7, placing the flower applique blocks as shown below.calico days quilt. 15

Sew each block together and press in rows.  Press the seams of the rows in alternate directions.  You can press seams open, I lost patience in doing this 🙂

IMG_5497

Match each intersection and pin.  Make sure to watch the points when you are sewing.  I scant my seams on this part.calico days quilt. 16

Baste, quilt, and bind!calico days quilt. 19  I love how charming this little quilt turned out.  And I sewed it in a few hours!!
