Pinwheels & Patches Quilt Tutorial

pinwheelsandpatches

I’m so excited to be a part of Shari Butler’s blog tour for her upcoming line of fabric In The Meadow for Sweet Bee Designs!!  This fabric has such a fresh and whimsical feel – it’s perfect for spring and summer!  I originally thought to make a wall quilt or a table quilt but I kept cutting and sewing and it turns out I’ve made myself a new throw quilt!!

IMG_8767

Aren’t these fabrics so HAPPY!!!!!!  I wanted to make a quilt that felt fun and relaxed just like summer should feel!  I call it Pinwheels & Patches and I’m going to share how you can make this quilt!!

DSC_0259

The quilt measures 54″ x 72″.

DSC_0291

And a little secret, this quilt is made using only 1 quilt block repeated over and over!  Cool!!!

IMG_8780

Fabric Requirements:

1 red fat quarter (pinwheels)

1 blue fat quarter (pinwheels)

1 yellow fat quarter (pinwheels)

3 low volume fat quarters (pinwheels)

16-20 assorted fat quarters (yellow, pink, red, blue prints)

2/3 yard binding fabric

3 1/2 yard backing fabric

Instructions

all seams 1/4″

WOFQ means width of Fat Quarter (measuring 21″)

Press all seams open

Make the Half Square Triangles (HSTs)

Begin by cutting (3) 5 3/8″ x WOFQ strips of the red, blue, yellow, and three low volume fat quarters (all the pinwheel fat quarters).

Subcut them into (8) 5 3/8″ squares of each color:

IMG_8772

Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of each low volume 5 3/8″ square.  Or you can use one of these rulers to draw the 1/4″ lines.

IMG_8773

Pair a low volume and a red, yellow or blue 5 3/8″ square, right sides together.  Sew 1/4″ along both sides of the diagonal line.

IMG_8774

Cut on the diagonal line.

IMG_8775

Press seams open.  Continue making (16) HSTs of each of the red, yellow, and blue:

IMG_8776

The HSTs should measure 5″ at this point.

Using the 16-20 assorted fat quarters, cut a total of (144) 5″ charm squares.  This is a scrappy looking quilt, so no need to plan, just cut and go!!

Once you have the (144) 5″ assorted squares cut and the (48) HSTs made, you’re ready to assemble the blocks!

There are 12 large blocks in this quilt each made up of 4 smaller blocks.

Choose (3) 5″ squares and 1 HST.  Lay them out like this:

IMG_8778

This is the basic unit of the quilt.  You will make 48 of these.  You can lay the whole thing out, or go totally random and just choose fabrics from a pile!  That’s what’s so fun about this quilt!

Sew the squares together as you would a 4-patch, pressing seams open.

IMG_8783

Continue making this block unit until you’ve made 48.  Next, select 4 block units with matching pinwheel colors, and make a larger 4-patch. Notice how the block is rotated to form a pinwheel! Press seams open.

IMG_8782

IMG_8785

Continue this process until you’ve made (12) large blocks:

IMG_8823

Of course, you can lay out the whole quilt and sew it together row by row.  I was excited to find a different method of getting this look!

Once all the blocks are completed, sew them together in rows.  Then sew the rows together, making sure to always match and pin at seam intersections.

Pressing seams open throughout the process allows you to mix up blocks and not worry about which way they are pressed!

All that’s left now is to quilt and bind!

My quilting is always done late at night with Mufasa’s help…..he looks really helpful!!!

IMG_8841

I love how it turned out!  It’s exactly how I wanted it to look and feel!  The fabrics lend themselves to a patchwork feel.  I love that there are large, medium, and small prints in the collection.  It just makes me happy to look at it!

DSC_0308

DSC_0239

And who doesn’t love a striped binding!!!

DSC_0336

It’s easy and breezy!!

DSC_0319

You will be surprised how fast you can put this together!

Late Bird Quilt Pattern

late bird quilt pattern 4I love spring, spring colors, flowers, birds, pretty much everything about spring!  When I saw Lella Boutique’s new fabric line Nest, I fell immediately in love!

nest fabric moda
When I’m not sure what I’m going to make I tend to buy charm packs because its a fun little sample of all the fabrics for only about $10.

late bird quilt pattern 10So I set out to design a wall quilt using only my charm pack and background yardage.  I love how it turned out!

late bird quilt pattern 8

I named the quilt Late Bird because when I was in kindergarten you were either an “early bird” or a “late bird” meaning you would have early or afternoon kindergarten.  I was a late bird and I think I’ve always been a late bird!  Early bird is totally not me!!!

late bird quilt pattern 19

All that’s required is 1 charm pack, 1 yard of background fabric and 1 yard backing fabric!!!  The quilt measures 25 1/2″ square and is perfect to hang on a wall or place on a table – or for a cat mat as you will see at the bottom of the post!

You can purchase the full color quilt pattern in my Etsy shop for instant download.

I love the little scrappy border!!  It’s fun to see how much you can do with a charm pack!!!

I hope you love this quilt and even more I hope you love making it!

“cat” mini quilt

DSC_0083
I’m super excited to be a part of Fat Quarter Shop & Lori Holt’s Spelling Bee sew along!  Her new alphabet inspired quilt book is so fun and amazing!!  IMG_3688

I choose to sew an “a” and a “t” for my contribution to the sew along.IMG_8381

As much as the word “at” is nice and all…..the word “cat” is way better!!!

IMG_8402

Mufasa loved helping with the photo shoot!!IMG_8358

The letters are super fun to put together and her instructions are always easy to follow!!IMG_8379

I wanted to make a little mini quilt with “cat” letters

IMG_8404So I sewed a cat block from my I Love Cats Quilt and put it all together!IMG_8391

If you would like to make one here’s what you do:

Make the cat block from my quilt pattern, finishes 10″.

Make the “cat” letters from the Spelling Bee book.

Cut background measurements according to the chart below:

cat measurements

Sew the quilt center together in rows, pressing toward the background pieces.  The inside finished measurements are 18″ square.

For the border, you need (88) 2 1/2″ squares – make it real scrappy!!  I used all sorts of vintage inspired prints!

IMG_8421

Sew (2) sets of 9 squares together, pressing in one direction.  Sew them to each side of the cat center.  Press toward the center.

Sew (2) sets of 11 squares together, pressing in one direction.  Sew them to the top and bottom.  Press toward the center.

Repeat the process with the next border, sewing (2) sets of 11 squares for the sides and (2) sets of 13 squares for the top and bottom.  Press toward the last border.

Baste, Quilt, Bind!

Hello Springtime Quilt Pattern

spring quilt 6

I am so happy it is finally spring!  I feel like I am coming out of hibernation and ready to live!!!  To celebrate the this wonderful season I created this spring-inspired quilt!

hello springtime quilt pattern 3

The quilt is made up of 8″ flower quilt blocks in pinks and teals from Riley Blake Designs’ Wonderland 2 designed by Melissa from Polkadotchair.  This fabric is seriously one of my favorite fabric lines and I’ve been hoarding it for this past year!

hello springtime quilt pattern 11

Each flower block is variegated from dark to light which gives it a soft feel.  The quilt measures 71″ square which is a perfect throw size, a perfect fold up and put on the end of your bed size, or a perfect take to the park size!!

You can purchase the pattern in my Etsy shop for instant download, click here.  The pattern does not require cutting any triangles and is written for fat quarters!!!  So bust open your stash!!!

Across The Board Quilt Pattern

Across the Board Quilt

Today is my turn on Riley Blake’s Derby Day Blog Tour!  I have always loved Melissa from the Polkadotchair and everything she does!  When she first announced this fabric line I immediately fell in love and wrote this quilt pattern hoping I would get a chance to sew with it!  The navy and green florals with pops of pink totally stole my wanna be Ivy League heart! Melissa has created a amazing look book for her Derby Day fabrics which you have to see!!  The projects she designed for this collection are so creative and fun, be sure to stop by for a peek!

derby-day-fabrics-lookbook

derby day chain quilt pattern

I totally wanted to name this quilt something to do with horse racing which is where the inspiration for the fabric line comes from.  I named the quilt pattern Across the Board which means “pertaining to all categories or things,” originated around 1903 as a betting term in horse racing. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, wagering across the board means betting that your horse will finish “in either first, second, or third place.”  And I think the chain pattern resembles movement across a board!  Love it!!Across the Board Quilt Pattern

The quilt measures 60″ x 72″ with each block measuring 12″.  This is a great pattern to use larger prints in and it sews up pretty quick!

Derby Day FabricI am putting navy blue minky on the back (and sending it to the quilter) and then it will be MY new movie watching quilt!!!!

Circa 1974 Quilt Finish

gingham girls quilt 3

My Circa 1974 quilt is finally finished!!  I live in California and my quilter lives in Utah so I’m not always able to have my quilts quilted and bound as soon as I would like.  But I am super excited that this quilt is finished and is one of my favorite quilt’s I’ve made!!!

I love using chambray in my quilts for a super casual feel – perfect for taking on picnics or to the beach!

gingham girls quilt 4

I think the quilting goes perfectly with the 1970’s vibe of the quilt!  I am seriously so in love!!!gingham girls quilt

Bouncing Off The Walls Quilt Pattern

DSC_0671You know me and cats – so when I saw this fabric from Riley Blake Designs called MEOW I fell in love!!!  I created this quilt pattern to showcase all the amazing and whimsical prints in this fabric line.  I hope you like it :). Mufasa sure does 🙂category6580

DSC_0721

What I love about this quilt is that you don’t have to cut up this adorable fabric into tiny bits and it still has a nice “pieced” feel.

DSC_0707

I called this pattern Bouncing Off The Walls because that’s how Mufasa likes to play!  I throw bouncy balls and they bounce every where and he chases them like a maniac!

DSC_0726

The quilt measures 66″ x 75″ which is a great throw size.  The pattern is fat quarter friendly and the circles are machine appliquéd for a quick finish!  This pattern is a great way to use your favorite theme prints – you know me and theme prints!!!

You can purchase the PDF pattern for instant download in my Etsy shop.

Sally and Mufasa are fighting over who will get the quilt – its totally MINE!!

Almost A Log Cabin Quilt Finish

DSC_0584

A while back I wrote a little tutorial called Almost A Log Cabin.  Its a fast and fun pattern to whip up.  I finally have it quilted and bound and I am super in love with it!!!!
almost a log cabin

The fabrics are Heather Ross’ The Sleeping Porch and they are lawn fabrics which means light and soft and breezy!

almost a lob cabin 2

It was a bit of a challenge to find something to go on the back that fit the feel of the fabric.  I went through my stash of vintages sheets and found the most perfect quilt back ever!  I love that is vintage and matches the quilt top!  I love how my quilter quilted it!!!  Super whimsical!

almost a log cabin 5

The pink in the fabrics is the exact pink I have in my front yard geraniums!  Bright pink!!

This is such a fun quilt and a fast finish!  You can totally adjust the size to make it what ever you want!

Moonlight Path – Update and Christmas Version

Here is a little update on my Moonlight Path quilt tutorial!
moonlight-path-quilt-tutorial

I have always loved this pattern – it looks so much more difficult than it really is!

IMG_5155

I just got it back from the quilter and I love love love how it turned out!

It’s perfect with the soft aqua minky on the back!

You can scroll down to find the full tutorial.

img_6504As a little bonus I’ve included a Christmas design which alternates red block and green block.  You can use all your scraps of low volume for the background – super fun!

I omitted the “cat” blocks in the Christmas version – it’s the same block repeating.

OK – I got totally carried away with the quilt design software and I have a bunch of different Christmas versions!  I can’t wait to make one!!!

version 4

version 5

version 3

christmas version 2

christmas version

version 6

Let’s get started!!

all seams 1/4″

img_6317

We will only be using 2 1/2″ strips for the blocks.

Each dark print 2 1/2″ strip will be enough for one block.  You need 50 dark strips for the 50 blocks.

Each light print 2 1/2″ strip will be enough for (2) blocks.  You need 25 light print strips.

Each medium print 2 1/2″ strip will be enough for (2) blocks.  You need 25 medium print strips.

img_6324

Once the strips are cut, sew the light and medium strips together lengthwise.  Press toward the dark.  Sub-cut into 2 1/2″ increments.  Cut the dark strips in 4 1/2″ increments.  The above picture shows everything you need for one block.

img_6325

Sew the strip set to the dark rectangle as pictured above.  You will have (4) of these units per block.

img_6397

Continue sewing in this manner until all the strips are sewn into these units.

img_6326

The pieced units will be sewn as pictured above, like a 4-patch.  I pressed the seams alternately as much as I could for easy matching.

img_6327

Now you have a finished block!  Continue sewing all the units together to form 50 blocks.

img_6460

I love how they each turned out!!!

img_6458

Cat Blocks

You will need to make 6 additional fussy-cut cat blocks to mix in.

Fussy cut the cat fabric in 4 1/2″ squares.  Cut 6.

Cut (24) light 2 1/2″ squares.

Cut (24) medium 2 1/2″ squares.

Cut (24) dark 2 1/2″ squares.

Lay them out according to the photo below:

img_6467

Sew the top and bottom rows together.  Sew the sides together, press, then sew to the sides of the cat square.  Finally sew the top and bottom rows to the center cat unit, matching seams.  Press.  img_6469

I love the cat block!  It wouldn’t be a quilt unless there was a little theme print in it!!!  Of course you could omit the cat blocks and just make 56 of the original blocks.

img_6475

Lay the quilt out 7 blocks across and 8 rows down.  I had to play around with my blocks so they didn’t create an unwanted pattern.  It’s tricky to look random 🙂  Sew the blocks together pressing seams alternately with each row.  Sew the rows together pinning at every seam intersection.  Quilt, bind, love!
