Jesus is the Light of the World

Welcome to the first day of our 14 Day Walk with Christ.  I hope you and your family enjoy these lessons and take time to Come unto Christ as we anticipate the wonderful celebration of Easter.

Day #1 – Jesus is the Light of the World
Lesson Printable:  Download PDF, Download JPEG
This lesson is a little backwards as we are doing the activity/craft first.  We are making lanterns to be used in the lesson.

Activity: Mason Jar Lanterns
Supplies: Mod Podge, Mason Jars, Tissue Paper, Wire. Paper Punch, colored tissue paper, tea light
I used a hexagon shape paper punch, you can use any shape to cut the colored tissue.  Mod Podge the tissue paper shapes to the outside of the jar.  Let dry.  Wrap wire around the mouth of the jar to secure and form a handle.  Place a tea light in the jar.

Have everyone design their own pattern – you can’t mess them up!  They all turn out cute!!

Lesson:
Begin the lesson by turing off all the lights, or going into a dark room.  Have a discussion about light and darkness.  What types of physical light do we need in our life (sun, flashlight, light bulbs, candles, headlights, night light, moon, etc.) ?  How do you feel in the dark?  Do you remember a time you were afraid of the dark?
One by one, light the tea lights in each person’s lantern and notice how the light gets brighter with each light.

Light always dispels darkness, it can never be the other way around.
Sing: Teach me to Walk in the Light of His Love
Scripture:  John 8:12 – Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

He also declared, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). He is the way and He is the light because His teachings light our path in mortal life and show us the way back to the Father.

What does “the path” refer to?
How can we feel spiritual darkness?
How can Jesus light your path?

As we keep the Lord’s commandments, we see his light ever brighter on our path and we realize the fulfillment of Isaiah’s promise, “And the Lord shall guide thee continually” (Isa. 58:11).

And so we see that Jesus Christ is the light of the world because he is the source of the light that quickens our understanding, because his teachings and his example illuminate our path, and because his power persuades us to do good.” – Dallin H Oaks

Sometimes the path is hard
Jesus taught that “there will be times when you will walk a path strewn with thorns and marked by struggle. There may be times when you feel detached—even isolated—from the Giver of every good gift.” For these times, he reminded us that “we were not placed on this earth to walk alone. … He will be there for us to provide help if we but ask.  Two ways we can find comfort: as we remember prayer and take time to turn to the scriptures, our lives will be infinitely more blessed and our burdens will be made lighter.” Thomas S. Monson
Journal time:
What is “the path” and where is my path leading?
How can Jesus light your way?  What can we do to see the light?
How have you felt Him light your path?

If you have little ones who have a hard time writing in a journal, they might enjoy coloring this picture:

Backyard Roses Quilt Blocks

IMG_6512

I am so happy to be part of the Backyard Roses blog tour!  And how timely is the release of this fabric as all the “Backyard” roses in Southern California are in full bloom today!

backyard roses fabric 2

I am so excited about this new fabric line from Riley Blake Designs designed by Nadra Ridgeway!!  The colors are so bright and cheerful and they match my house perfectly!

For my project I decided to problem solve.  I have this narrow strip of wall in my family room that corners into the kitchen.  I just repainted my family room last week and I wanted something new and fresh hanging there.  Backyard roses was the perfect solution!  I got out my Farm Girl Vintage Book and began selecting some of my favorite quilt blocks.

IMG_6510

I made each of the 4 quilt blocks in the 12″ size.  I quilted diagonal lines going one direction about 1.5″ apart.  Then I bound each of the four little quilts.

I love how the fabrics play together!!

Here you can see a little peek into my kitchen from the wall where I hung them.

backyard roses fabric 8

How do you hang your little quilts?  I find the smallest pins possible and I hammer them in through the corners of the quilt into the wall.  I figure my quilts usually have pins in them so no harm there and it makes a super tiny hole in the wall!backyard roses fabric 5

I am so excited how this little project turned out and don’t the colors totally just go with my kitchen!

backyard roses fabric 9

I get excited every time I walk by this little wall!!

Summer Nautical Pillows

summer throw pillow tutorialI know most of the stores have their fall and even Christmas decorations out on the shelves,  but we still have one more week of summer vacation left and I am embracing every minute of it!  Summer is my favorite!  I love being with my children all day and just being FREE!!!!!  I had to get in one more summer sewing project.  I decorated my family room with a few nautical pops here and there and my couch was begging for some nautical pillows!  These sew up in a snap!

Sea Critters Pillow (20″):

Don’t you just love this fabric from Dear Stella?  We love sea critters at our house!

Cut the sea critters fabric 13.5″ x 20″

Seersucker Twist Red from Blend fabric 7″ x 20″

cotton batting 21″ or larger

20″ navy blue lace trim

2 yards navy fringe trim

20″ square Denim for the back

20″ or longer Zipper

accent fabric 4.5″ x 20″

20″ pillow form

Spray n Bond for basting

Sew them together using 1/4″ seams.  Using Spray n Bond basting spray, baste the pillow top to the batting.nautical_pillow_tutorial_1

With the two pieces basted you can quilt as desired.  Straight lines would be cute, I was impatient and free motion is faster for me 🙂nautical_pillow_tutorial_2

Trim off the excess batting

Add the navy blue lace trimnautical_pillow_tutorial_4

Sew the navy blue fringe to the right side of the pillow.  I found it easier to use my walking foot.  Curve the corners.

Prepare the back of the pillow.  I have found this is the fastest way to finish a pillow.  For the tutorial on how to do this, click HERE.  I cut the back 20″ and then cut 3″ from the top for the zipper placement.  The chevron piece is cut 4.5″ and then folded in half.

Now that the back is ready, place the right sided together, with the zipper open, and sew all the way round the pillow using 1/4″ seams.  Turn and insert the pillow form.

I Heart Whales Pillow (20″)

This is very similar to my pink I Heart Whales pillow found HERE.  Follow those directions for the Heat n Bond Applique.

nautical_pillow_tutorial_10

Cut the solid white 10.5″ x 20″

Cut (2) Seersucker Twist Blue from Blend fabric 5.25″ x 20″

“I Heart” pattern click HERE

Whales from Blend’s True Blue fabric line

Prepare the appliqué pieces (directions HERE).  Iron the pieces to the solid white fabric.  Sew the blue fabrics to the white fabric using 1/4″ seams.

Using Spray n Bond, baste the pillow top to the cotton batting and quilt.  Instead of appliquéing the images on before quilting, I sewed around each image in navy thread during the quilting process to give the pieces a little pop.

I finished this pillow the same way as the Sea Critters pillow with the same navy trim.

I love the backs of the pillows!nautical_pillow_tutorial_12

Girls Weekend in SLC

This past weekend we went to Salt Lake City for a girls weekend.  My mom, my mother-in-law, my daughter, and I all met and stayed in a hotel.  It was a picture perfect weekend.  It lightly snowed everyday.  We felt like we were in a movie!  The main reason for the trip was that we had tickets for the Mormon Tabernacle Christmas Concert featuring Alfie Boe – our FAV!!!!

We walked around City Creek and WE GOT TO MEET ALFIE at the book signing!!!  We talked to him, took pictures and he touched my hand!!!!  I was floating!!!!

SWOON!!!

We got to play the Mormon Tabernacle organ.  It was one of the most exciting experiences of my life!  The lady giving the noon recital let a few people come up and play the organ.  It was amazing.

A quick stop to the Western Nut Company for some goodies

Then on to the Nauvoo Cafe for the WORLD’S BEST Turkey Pot Pie.  It really is to die for!

The lights everywhere were spectacular!  Such a beautiful place – especially with the snow falling.

Finally it was time for the concert we had been waiting for.  I can’t even put it into words – it was AMAZING.  I don’t think I took a breath during the whole thing.  Alfie Boe is FABULOUS!!  I didn’t want it to end.
